RUFFIN: NOW A JAZZ MOMENT

Beat the Clock theme under

WHEN DICK HYMAN WAS IN COLLEGE, HE WON A PIANO CONTEST SPONSORED BY WOV IN NEW YORK CITY. THE PRIZE WAS 12 LESSONS WITH NONE OTHER THAN 1986 NEA JAZZ MASTER TEDDY WILSON.

DICK HYMAN.

Fade into Teddy cut Dick Hyman: And I did study with him, and I got to be friendly with him, and our paths occasionally crossed professionally thereafter. He was very influential. One time I asked him why it was that, although it seemed to me I was playing fairly well on some days, on the next day, I might be playing very poorly. And he said, “That’s why you practice,” which was a life lesson I’ve never forgotten.

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH NEA JAZZ MASTER DICK HYMAN WAS PRODUCED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
