To commemorate the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote, the nation has recognized Women’s Equality Day since August 26, 1971. This day provides each of us with the opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the strength, sacrifice, and success of inspiring women who have paved a path toward progress and the promise of America—that all people are created equal.

The NEA strives to recognize the outstanding creative contributions of women to American cultural life across its wide-ranging body of initiatives and programs. As we pause and reflect on the progress that has come as a result of the efforts of pioneering women, we also recognize that there is still more work to do to guarantee equality for all women in every corner of society. The arts are a precursor to our highest ideals and aspirations of equity and justice. Helping us step into our shared humanity, they are vital to creating a future where we all enjoy equality.

I encourage you to celebrate Women’s Equality Day by engaging with the NEA at arts.gov and our social media channels as we highlight the work and impact of women in the arts.
