“Bharatanatyam is traditionally performed by solo dancers. Thirty years ago, we were among the first to create and present contemporary ensemble work; we were able to do this largely because we were in the U.S. In a genre where most choreographers feel the need to choose between upholding tradition and breaking boundaries, we demonstrate through our work that we can be simultaneously culture-bearers and creative innovators. We strongly believe that, through our innovation, we keep our lineage alive.”
