Snooky Young on Johnny Carson

Now, A Jazz Moment?

MUSIC: "Tonight Show Theme," CD: The Tonight Show With Doc Severinson, (iTunes download)

Snooky Young: Clark Terry was on the Tonight Show and they wanted another brother over there and Clark said, ?I got a man for you.? He said, ?Get Snooky Young.?

NEA Jazz Master Snooky Young played in some of the greatest big bands of jazz history. But in 1967, after years of being on the road, he settled into a fruitful TV gig -- The Tonight Show with host Johnny Carson.

Snooky Young: Johnny used to come in some days and he?d play the drums. I mean, he wasn?t no drummer but he wanted to be a drummer and he would set up there and play some drums for a little while and we would kid around and have some fun. He was quite a guy.

MUSIC: up and fades

This Jazz Moment with trumpeter Snooky Young was created by the National Endowment for the Arts.
