Annie Ross on working with Lambert and Hendricks

NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT...

MUSIC:

Summertime (Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross)
CD: The Hottest New Group In Jazz
Originally released 1960, 1996 Sony Music Entertainment

CONSIDERED ONE OF THE BEST VOCAL GROUPS IN JAZZ HISTORY, LAMBERT, HENDRICKS, & ROSS APPLIED THE CONCEPTS OF BEBOP HARMONY TO VOCAL MUSIC. NEA JAZZ MASTER ANNIE ROSS RECALLS HOW THE TRIO -- DAVE LAMBERT, JON HENDRICKS, AND HERSELF -- WORKED TOGETHER DURING THEIR 7-YEAR TENURE IN THE 1950S AND 60S.

Annie Ross: We spent a LOT of time listening . John wrote all the lyrics brilliantly. Dave would put it all on paper. We had virtually no rehearsal. We would gather at Dave's little flat on Cornelius Street and he would be at the board writing all the stuff out. John would be reading a paper. And I'd be reading the paper or doing a crossword puzzle. Then finally after about 2 hours, we'd get up and we'd try it out. But it came very naturally to us.

MUSIC: up and fades

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH VOCALIST ANNIE ROSS WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
