The village of Glencoe, Illinois, is one of the oldest suburban communities north of Chicago, settled in the mid-1800s. The 9,000-person village also is home to the Chicago Botanic Gardens and neighbor to the Ravinia Festival.
Writers' Theatre and the Village of Glencoe, which have been working together on artistic projects for 20 years, will use Our Town grant funding to support the final design and construction documents for a new cultural facility, theater, and community venue in downtown Glencoe. The new United States Green Building Council LEED Silver-certified facility will include indoor and outdoor performance spaces, as well as room for classes, workshops, lectures, and family programming. Internationally renowned Studio Gang Architects was commissioned to complete the concept design, and is currently working on the initial schematic design. The next phase will be to complete the final design and construction documents. Once complete, it is anticipated that the new facility will draw as many as 80,000 people to the area, including patrons, students, and artists.
