The NEA grant will support the development and implementation of a cultural wayfinding system master plan in Birmingham, Alabama. An urban planning firm will review past and current wayfinding and cultural signage, convene an advisory team, consult with design professionals on the creation of physical wayfinding structures, and solicit submissions from local and regional artists for the development of creative wayfinding concepts and installations. An artist will be chosen based on artistic excellence, visual innovation, and incorporation of Birmingham's cultural characteristics. A pilot wayfinding structure for an identified gateway will be designed by the selected artist. This project builds on the Birmingham City Comprehensive Plan, and will closely work with the City of Birmingham and REV Birmingham. The Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area has a population of 1.2 million.
