Newark, New Jersey
The NEA grant will support Newark Riverfront Revival, a series of performances, cultural activities, and design and planning workshops related to Newark's Passaic riverfront. Building on the recent completion of the city's first riverfront park, the project will connect Newark's diverse populations to this new civic space through cross-cultural programming that reflects the music and dance traditions of Newark and its residents. Design workshops and a series of tours available to schools, community groups, block associations, and interested residents will engage participants in architecture-based participatory planning, and community improvement activities to imagine the future of the riverfront. Ironbound Community Corporation and the Newark Public Art Program have worked in partnership for four years to revitalize Newark's riverfront, which for decades suffered from neglect and underutilization. The project will benefit Newark's 273,546 residents.
