The NEA grant will support public art interventions for the area surrounding Bergamot Station Arts Center during the construction of a new, regional multimodal transit hub. Project activities will include artist residencies, performances, and murals to activate the Arts Center, Bergamot Transit Village, and a newly designated creative district. Currently under construction, the new light rail station in Bergamot will connect to Los Angeles, attracting thousands of people to the neighborhood. Work by resident artists will build on planning recommendations funded by a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Challenge grant. Partners include 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica Museum of Art, Bergamot Station Ltd., and City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs Division. The population of Santa Monica is 89,736.
