Providence, Rhode Island
The NEA grant will support a community design effort to knit together a cultural corridor along Washington Street and to establish the FirstWorks Festival as a recurring biennial arts event. Project activities include a public cultural planning process for public art interventions and cultural activity along Washington Street, the main transit artery between Kennedy Plaza and the east and west sides of the city.
In partnership with FirstWorks, Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy, Providence Foundation, and Downtown Providence Improvement District, the City of Providence will lead a coalition of more than 18 arts and civic organizations to host the FirstWorks Festival in Kennedy Plaza featuring world-renowned artists and community performers. Located downtown, Kennedy Plaza is a transit hub that is utilized by as many as 71,000 individuals annually. Activities are intended to serve the 178,042 individuals who live in Providence, as well as attract visitors from the surrounding region.
