Blue Barn Theatre
The NEA grant will support design development for a new theater in Omaha's historic Old Market South neighborhood. Blue Barn Theatre, in partnership with Douglas County, has commissioned architects Min Day to lead a design process that engages local artists and artisans, establishes new community partnerships, draws diverse audiences, and will generate future development interest in the area. Additional design consultants include Fisher Dachs Associates. The theater will serve as a cultural center for the economically depressed neighborhood, which was once a cornerstone of Omaha's immigrant community and recently has been designated for Neighborhood Conservation Enhancement.
Blue Barn Theatre's new location along the South 10th Street corridor is expected to provide an important bridge between existing cultural attractions and racially polarized communities to the North and South. Anticipated project impacts include increased visual and performing arts activities, expanded diversity in Blue Barn Theatre audiences, and a renewed sense of neighborhood pride.
