M12 Incorporated (Denver, CO)
Washington County, Colorado
Colorado's Washington County, about 100 miles east of Denver, is one of the highest agricultural producers in the state, mostly home to family farming and ranching. Over the last 30 years, more than 15 rural towns in the county have seen out-migration of its citizens to urban communities.
The M12 Art Collective is partnering with the Washington County Colorado Commissioners on the art project Action on the Plains: Contemporary Art in Rural Landscapes, which will reconnect Colorado's urban citizens with the livelihood of regional farmers. The project is engaging five visiting artists from the University of Colorado Art Department to create artworks with the communities of five rural towns in Washington County. The project will use its Our Town grant for one of the five art collaborations: Gran's University: Ornaments of Knowledge, in which the art collective Kultivator will collaborate with the citizens of the town of Last Chance and surrounding communities. The project will develop an archive of agricultural knowledge held by the region's women through the generations and create a mobile, sculptural piece of public art that will serve as a meeting place for community cultural events. M12 has been working closely with the residents of Washington County for three years and this project will build off their deep ties to the community.
