San Jose, California

$250,000

2011

Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, San Jose is the third largest city in California. It is known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley," and companies such as Cisco Systems, IBM, and eBay are among the city's largest employers.

A new initiative, Silicon Valley Inside/Out, will promote and enhance downtown San Jose by establishing new partnerships between arts organizations and technology companies, and commissioning temporary and permanent technology-activated public art projects that explore San Jose's identity as an "interactive city." The City of San Jose's Office of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program and ZER01 will work together to create a Strategic Advisory Committee to frame and guide the development of art and technology partnerships to build a more visually-dynamic downtown. There will be three new technology-activated public art projects installed at downtown locations, and a series of temporary art projects will be launched in the lead-up to the ZER01SJ Biennial of Art and Technology. The project will enliven downtown San Jose, appealing to the 450,000 annual visitors, local technology companies, downtown employees, and residents.
