City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture
San Diego, California
The Village at Market Creek is located in the heart of southeastern San Diego. The neighborhood is home to approximately 88,000 residents, including Mexican, Samoan, Lao, Filipino, African-American, Sudanese, Somali, Chamorro, and Kumeyaay Indian cultural groups.
The Arts Endowment will helps support design, planning, and community engagement for a public art plan for the Village at Market Creek. A new "arts overlay" will build upon the award-winning community planning process that has revitalized this 60-acre neighborhood, once known for its severe blight, into a destination built on multicultural assets. The arts overlay will stimulate a thriving arts district that includes public art for open spaces, walking trails, and plazas; gateway art at transit entrances; motifs that highlight and celebrate the cultural heritage of community residents; and programming for the new Center for Community & Cultural Arts. The San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation will spearhead coordination and development of the project, with support from numerous cultural institutions and public partners throughout the region.
