Artspace Projects, Inc. (Minneapolis, MN)
Founded in 1979, Artspace Projects is dedicated to providing affordable live/work spaces for artists and arts organizations. As the organization has expanded, Artspace has also begun developing arts districts as viable centers of their communities.
As one of their upcoming projects, Artspace will use their Our Town grant to convert two vacant, four-story historic buildings in downtown Hamilton, Ohio, into a 36-unit affordable live/work facility for artists and their families. The Artspace Hamilton Lofts will also provide 3,000 square feet of street-front retail space, and create a new exterior walkway and pedestrian plaza that will physically link the project to the surrounding neighborhood. The renovation will restore the original façades and features of both buildings, which are located on the historically significant Mehrum-Lindley Block in the city's Architecture and Historical Conservation District. Transformation of these structures into a lively center of arts activity will complement the Vision 2020 Plan for downtown Hamilton, and contribute to the cultural and economic revitalization of its central business district.
