A Spectacular Derailment

Big Read Caricature of Marilynne Robinson by John Sherffius

The Big Read selection Housekeeping opens with the narrator Ruth recounting her family’s curious and troubled history in the mysterious town of Fingerbone. The first tragedy is the unusual death of her grandfather, a railroad employee who plunged into Fingerbone Lake aboard a derailed train, long before Ruth was born. Here’s former NEA National Council member and writer, Bret Lott, on the powerful train wreck. We’ll also hear a reading by actress Annette Bening, who, in my humble opinion, is the perfect voice to bring Marilynne Robinson’s words to life. Hear for yourself. [2:27]
