NEA Heritage Fellows & The Big Read
On June 4, we announced the 2013 NEA Heritage Fellows. Holy moly, with nine states represented, could there be a more diverse range of artisans in terms of talent and geography? After you peruse their astounding biographies and compelling work samples, be sure to check out the Heritage Fellows on a few of our Big Read audio guides. They are:
- 1989 NEA Heritage Fellow, John Cephas: The music of Cephas and Phil Wiggins is featured on our A Lesson Before Dying program
- 2006 NEA Heritage Fellow, Charles Carrillo: Carrillo is a commentator on our Bless Me, Ultima program
- 2009 NEA Heritage Fellow, Edwin Colón Zayas: His music is featured on our In the Time of the Butterflies program. And last but not least...
- 2013 NEA Heritage Fellow Ramón "Chunky" Sanchez: His music will be featured on the soon-to-be released audio guide for the novel, Into the Beautiful North.
If you don't have time to tune into the full half-hour audio programs, here's an excerpt of Carrillo and author Rudolfo Anaya talking about the landscape in Bless Me, Ultima. This moment also includes an excellent reading by actor Cheech Marin. [1:03]
