An Introduction to Curanderismo

A few weeks ago, to coincide with the Albuquerque/Bernalillo County Libraries' celebration of Bless Me, Ultima, the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque launched a three-week course on curanderismo. What a cool way to dig a little deeper into the mystery behind one of the most fascinating characters in Bless Me, Ultima: the curandera, an old woman with special healing powers who comes to stay with the Márez family. One of my favorite moments on this Big Read audio documentary is when we hear from a true curandera. Not only does she explain what a curandera is, but she takes us inside her shop of herbal remedies. Introducing Maclovia B. Zamora! [2:47]
