Johnny Mandel on harmonizing standards

NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT...

MUSIC: Let's Fall In Love (Frank Sinatra)

Johnny Mandel:  You know, some guys really try to have a style and I don't.  I just work with what's there and try to do the best for what I have to work with.

MUSIC: swells on vocal

NEA JAZZ MASTER JOHNNY MANDEL HAS COMPOSED AND ARRANGED FOR MANY OF THE GREATEST VOCALISTS IN HISTORY ? OL' BLUE EYES FRANK SINATRA... PLUS TONY BENNETT, PEGGY LEE, SHIRLEY HORN, AND ANITA O'DAY...

MUSIC: Trav'lin Light (Anita O'Day)

Johnny Mandel: Johnny Mandel:  I got sort of mesmerized by the whole thing of mixing the colors of the various instruments.  There's many ways of harmonizing a standard song for instance.  If you're writing an arrangement, you're going to write lines that go against the melody, or in back of a singer or in back of a player, and what I wanted to do was to just furnish a nice smooth pathway with the chords, which is like you're making trails.

MUSIC: Little Did I Ever Dream (Tony Bennett)
up for punctuation, then fades under and out

THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH COMPOSER AND ARRANGER JOHNNY MANDEL WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.  I'M CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE.
