NOW, A JAZZ MOMENT…
MUSIC: Blue Monk (Jimmy Owens)
CD: The Monk Project
IPO Recordings 2011
Jimmy Owens: I think a jazz musician works continuously in their lives. There’s no such thing as an end because music is so vast that we can never really attain the complete knowledge of everything that we want in music. So you’ll find the wise musician is always still studying.
EVER THE GOOD STUDENT OF MUSIC, NEA JAZZ MASTER JIMMY OWENS IS ALSO A DEDICATED TEACHER OF THIS MUSIC…
Jimmy Owens: When you pass things on to people, it is the most positive thing that one can do. Especially when you can think back on the various people who helped you. I think back on all of the people who helped me – the Donald Byrds, the Randy Westons, the Dizzy Gillespies, the Billy Taylors -- all of these people who managed to answer my questions when I had questions, or just have me on the bandstand with them where I could learn from what they do. So when I can pass that on, it’s very, very important to me.
THIS JAZZ MOMENT WITH TRUMPETER JIMMY OWENS WAS CREATED BY THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.
