True Grit and a Revised Big Read

Just in case you haven’t heard the news, we added three new exciting novels to the Big Read canon: Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea; The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri; and True Grit by Charles Portis. Throughout the year, we’ll be showcasing excerpts of audio that never made the final cuts of our new Big Read audio guides. There’s simply not enough time and too much good “tape,” as audiophiles say, to include it all.

Here’s an excerpt from Charles Portis’s wholly unique novel, True Grit, about a young girl who sets out to avenge her father’s death in the winter of 1873. In this piece, the 14-year-old protagonist, a feisty girl named Mattie Ross, ruminates on a painstaking horseback ride with Marshall Rooster Cogburn and LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger. Mattie’s words, expertly read by writer Donna Tartt, are delivered to the reader from the perspective of an older Mattie some 50 years after the novel’s events have taken place. The full half-hour True Grit audio documentary, and accompanying Reader’s Guide and Teacher’s Guide, can be found on the newly redesigned Big Read website. Take a listen. [:46]
