Art Works Podcast: Jennie C. Jones
This week's podcast introduces Jennie C. Jones, winner of the 2012 Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize, an award given by the Studio Museum in Harlem and established by NEA Jazz Master George Wein. Jones casts her artistic net into wide and brilliant waters. Working from a minimalist aesthetic, she creates visual and sound abstractions that explore the intersection of art history, music history, and African-American history. Within these connections between art and music, she explores the simultaneous innovations of minimalist art and avant-garde jazz during the 1950s and 60s in work that often references the absence of African-American artists and experimental jazz musicians from the history of modernism.
