Got Country?

I was asked to list my 21 favorite country songs, so we could post one each business day for October also known as Country Music Month. I made a slight adjustment and came up with my favorite country song titles. Some are also favorite songs, but one of the distinctive features of country music is that an entire narrative, or situation, or character, or emotion can be summarized in a single line. Shakespeare, not so much. Or even Rodgers and Hammerstein, for that matter. Wit and story and feeling, all in one phrase---that's country. (Each title is credited to the performer who recorded the song as I first encountered it.)

"The Last Word in Lonesome is Me" --- Roger Miller
"Ring on Her Finger, Time on Her Hands" --- Lee Greenwood
"I Ain't As Good As I Once Was (But I'm as Good Once as I Ever Was)" --- Toby Keith
"It Was Always So Easy (to Find an Unhappy Woman, 'til I Started Looking for Mine)" --- Moe Bandy
"If the Phone Doesn't Ring It's Me" --- Jimmy Buffett
"Cleopatra, Queen of Denial" --- Pam Tillis
"Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger (When You Go Out at Night)?" --- Charlie Pride
"I Gotta Get Drunk (And I Sure Do Dread It)" --- Willie Nelson
"(It Takes Me All Night to Do) What I Used to Do All Night" --- The Bellamy Brothers

"What Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)" --- Jerry Lee Lewis
"We'll Burn that Bridge (When We Get to It)" --- Brooks and Dunn
"Friends in Low Places" --- Garth Brooks
