Creating a Sense of Belonging
Providence, Rhode Island
Called a ?revolutionary organization in which the distinction between performing and teaching disappears? by the New Yorker, Community MusicWorks provides instrument instruction, leadership development, and other community-based programs to the distressed Providence, Rhode Island neighborhood in which it is located. Violinist/violist Sebastian Ruth---a 2010 MacArthur Fellow---founded the organization in 1997, built around the permanent residency of the Providence String Quartet with which he performs. In an excerpt from this week?s Art Works podcast, Ruth talks about the importance of creating a sense of belonging to the classical music experience for those who haven?t experienced it before.
